Fabric that has undergone a mechanical compacting process during manufacturing to minimize post-purchase shrinking.
Pre-Shrunk (or compacted) Fabric is textile material that has been deliberately treated under high moisture, steam, and mechanical tension at the textile mill before the fabric is cut and sewn into finished garments. Natural cotton fibers have high elasticity; when knit into yarn under tension, the fibers stretch. During a consumer's first domestic laundry cycle, the combination of hot water, agitation, and tumble-drying heat releases this tension, causing the cotton fibers to snap back to their natural state, resulting in a garment shrinking by up to 5% to 10% in length and width. To prevent this, fabric compacting machines compress the knitted fabric loop-by-loop using steam and rollers, pre-shrinking the material under controlled industrial conditions. Utilizing pre-shrunk fabrics guarantees that a 240 GSM oversized tee or 350 GSM hoodie maintains its exact pattern silhouette and fit specifications even after multiple home wash cycles, drastically reducing customer sizing complaints and exchange returns.
