Connect Merch Factory to ChatGPT: Step-by-Step Setup Guide

Add Merch Factory to ChatGPT as a custom MCP app, choose what it may do, set your limits and try your first prompts.

The same Merch Factory connector that works with Claude also works with ChatGPT. Once you approve it, ChatGPT can look at your orders, create saved products from artwork links and prepare orders for you, only for the one brand you pick. This guide takes about ten minutes. You choose the permissions and you can pause or disconnect at any time.

Before you start

1. A Merch Factory brand where you are a member. Any member can connect and manage the connector.

2. A ChatGPT plan that supports custom MCP apps. OpenAI controls this and it is still evolving. At the time of writing, full support including actions that change data is rolling out to ChatGPT Business and Enterprise/Edu workspaces (a workspace admin may need to switch on developer mode), while some personal plans can only use read-only connections. Check OpenAI's help page for the current rules.

3. ChatGPT on the web. Custom MCP apps are added from ChatGPT's web settings.

4. Your artwork as direct links (only if you want saved products). A direct link ends at the PNG file itself, not a Drive or Dropbox page.

Step 1: Copy your connector address

In the Merch Factory dashboard open Claude under Integrations (the page covers both Claude and ChatGPT). The first card shows the connector address with a Copy button. It is the same address for every AI app.

Step 2: Add it to ChatGPT

In ChatGPT on the web open Settings and find the section for apps / connectors. Turn on developer mode if ChatGPT asks, then choose to create a custom MCP app. Give it a name such as Merch Factory, paste the address into the server URL field and choose OAuth as the sign-in method. ChatGPT renames these screens from time to time, so if a label differs, follow OpenAI's current instructions and keep to the same three inputs: a name, the address and OAuth.

Step 3: Sign in and choose permissions

ChatGPT sends you to a Merch Factory approval screen. Sign in if asked, pick the brand and decide what the app may do:

View your store data (always on). Orders, tracking, delivery problems, wallet balance and saved designs. Merch Factory does not send customer phone numbers, emails or street addresses.

Prepare drafts and saved products (optional). Create saved products from PNG links and prepare draft orders. Drafts are never charged.

Place orders from your wallet (optional, off by default). Needed for automatic ordering. Even then it only places orders inside the limits you set.

Press Approve. You are returned to ChatGPT, which can now use the app in your chats.

Step 4: Switch the app on in a chat and try it

Start a chat, add the Merch Factory app to it (ChatGPT lets you pick which apps a chat may use) and ask:

“What needs me today?”

“Which of my orders are stuck in NDR and why?”

“Process my Shopify orders.”

“Make a saved product from this PNG on a black hoodie.”

ChatGPT may show a confirmation before it uses a tool that changes something. That is ChatGPT's own safety step, on top of Merch Factory's permissions and limits, so approve only what you expect.

Limits, pausing and disconnecting

On the Claude page under Integrations you can set the largest single order, orders and spend per day and a minimum wallet balance, see every action in Recent activity, and use Pause changes from connected apps to stop all changes at once while apps can still read. Disconnect next to ChatGPT in the connected apps list removes its access immediately. Pause and disconnect apply to every AI app, not only ChatGPT.

Things to know

One brand per connection. To work with a second brand, connect again and pick that brand.

Billing. Merch Factory does not charge for the connector. ChatGPT's plan is billed by OpenAI.

What ChatGPT can see beyond Merch Factory. If you also connect your store or other apps to ChatGPT, it can see what those apps share. Connect only what you are comfortable with.

FAQ

Common Questions (FAQ)

Yes. Merch Factory is a remote MCP connector with OAuth sign-in. You add it to ChatGPT as a custom MCP app, approve it on a Merch Factory screen and choose its permissions. The same connector also works with Claude.

OpenAI decides this and it is still changing. At the time of writing, full MCP support including actions that change data is rolling out to ChatGPT Business and Enterprise/Edu, with a workspace admin enabling developer mode, while some personal plans are limited to reading. Check OpenAI's help page for the current rules.

Merch Factory does not send them. For the orders it lists, ChatGPT receives status, items, courier and tracking details, and the customer's name and city. It can see more only if you give it another route, such as a store connector in ChatGPT.

Only if you give the place-orders permission and switch on automatic ordering, and only inside your limits: the largest single order, orders and spend per day and a minimum wallet balance. Anything else stays a draft for you to place.

No. You sign in on a Merch Factory page in your own browser and ChatGPT receives a permission you can revoke at any time, never your password.
