Print on Demand vs Dropshipping in India: Which Is Better for a New Brand?

Margins, risk, branding, COD and returns compared, with a simple way to decide.

Both models let you open an online store without buying stock first. A customer orders, a supplier makes or picks the product and ships it to them, and you keep the difference. That is where the similarity ends. Dropshipping means reselling products that already exist. Print on demand (POD) means each product is made for you, with your design and your label, only after it is sold.

The choice decides what you will own after a year of work: a list of products anyone can copy, or a brand customers come back to. This guide compares the two for Indian sellers, where Cash on Delivery, returns and delivery speed shape profit more than in most countries.

The short answer

  • Choose print on demand if you want to build your own clothing or merch brand, can create or commission designs, and want repeat customers.
  • Choose dropshipping if you want to test trending gadgets or general products quickly and are comfortable competing mostly on price and ads.
  • Many brands do both: start with POD for the core apparel line, then add a few complementary products later.

How each model works

Dropshipping

You list a supplier's existing product in your store. When an order arrives, you pass it to the supplier, who ships it, usually in their own or plain packaging. Many other stores sell the same item, often from the same supplier.

Print on demand

You upload a design and pick a blank product, such as a 240 GSM oversized T-shirt. When a customer orders, the POD partner prints that one piece, packs it with your branding and ships it. With how print on demand works in India, there is no minimum order, so a design that never sells costs you nothing.

Profit: where the money really goes

Dropshipping looks cheaper per unit, but identical products force identical prices. If ten stores sell the same LED lamp, the one with the lowest price and cheapest ads wins, and margin shrinks towards zero.

With print on demand, the base cost per piece is higher because each item is made individually, but nobody else sells your design. A well-made heavyweight tee that costs a few hundred rupees to produce can sell for ₹799–₹1,299 when the design and brand are strong. Use the profit calculator to check your own numbers, including GST, shipping and returns, and read our T-shirt printing cost breakdown for each cost line.

The India factor: COD, RTO and delivery speed

Cash on Delivery is still how a large share of Indian online shoppers pay, and every COD order carries the risk of a refused parcel (RTO). Here POD has an advantage: a returned tee with your design can go back into stock and be sent to the next customer who orders that size, instead of becoming a loss. Merch Factory, for example, keeps returned items in a virtual inventory for 30 days so the next matching order ships from it.

Delivery speed matters too, because slow parcels get refused more often. Read our guide to reducing RTO on COD orders for the full playbook.
